Every January Nonprofit Tech 2.0 selects a new set of nonprofit avatars to be featured in the Nonprofit Tech 2.0 banner. The selection process is a personal one. I choose nonprofits that in my mind have excelled at social media throughout the previous year and represent causes that I feel are timely for the coming year. This year’s “Favorite Nonprofits” encompass a wide range of issues and organizations that are working to:

Protect endangered wildlife and animals worldwide: @WildAid, @RhinosIRF, @ALDFAnimalLaw, @AnimalsAsia, @SealRescue, @ApeActionAfrica
Prevent children from dying from lack of access to clean water or medical care: @Water, @AlexsLemonade
Empower entrepreneurs at the grassroots to start micro-enterprises: @Kiva, @DarfurStoves
Hold corporate-owned media accountable to its democratic purpose to educate (not manipulate) the masses: @AccuracyInMedia, @NPR
Educate about the reality of rampant childhood sexual abuse in America: @Darkness2Light
Protect the world’s remaining indigenous people: @Survival
Create an ethical and sustainable food production and distribution system: @SlowFoodUSA, @FarmSanctuary
Respond rapidly and efficiently to natural and humanitarian crises: @TheIRC, @ShelterBox
Educate about the realities of climate change in the 21st Century: @TckTckTck
Prevent students from dropping out of high school and increase literacy: @CISNational, @FirstBook
Empower girls to empower themselves worldwide: @GirlEffect, @PlanGlobal

Expose racism and teach tolerance in America: @Tolerance_org

Safeguard human rights in a politically volatile world: @Amnesty
Teach human history, art, and culture: @Smithsonian

In addition to increased exposure and promotion, the 2012 Nonprofits will also receive 10% of the proceeds from DIOSA Communications Webinars. That said, cheers to the nonprofits that made the 2012 list and to all nonprofits and nonprofit staff who use the Internet to foster social good.
